An observation of disability outside of academia

Viktoria Geldner

Eavesdropping can lead to interesting insights.

A taxi drives up the narrow street to the cinema.

The car stops. The driver lifts a walker from the trunk. And elderly lady opens the passenger door and says that it is difficult. That the door, because of the slope, always falls back shut.

The driver assembles the walker. The passenger door falls back shut.

I ask whether she wants me to help. I pull the door open and hold it. The lady says: “That’s kind. Since I became disabled, people have been kind to me.”
